Detailed Itinerary: The 85th Anniversary ANZAC Trail

Day 1: Arrival in Athens – The Legacy Begins Welcome to Greece! Upon arrival at Athens International Airport, your private driver will escort you to your hotel in the heart of the city. In the afternoon, we gather for a welcoming briefing and a gentle stroll through the historic Plaka district, walking the same streets where ANZAC soldiers spent their final nights of leave in 1941.

  • Dinner: Welcome Dinner at a traditional tavern with a majestic view of the Acropolis.

Day 2: Athens – Phaleron & The Acropolis. We start our pilgrimage at the Phaleron War Cemetery. We will attend a private wreath-laying ceremony among the 2,000+ Commonwealth graves, paying our respects to the fallen Australians and New Zealanders. In the afternoon, we ascend the Acropolis to witness the Parthenon, a symbol of democracy that the ANZACs were sent to protect.

Day 3: The Thermopylae Line & Brallos Pass A full-day expedition to the mainland. We visit the historic pass of Thermopylae, where in 1941, the 2nd ANZAC Corps echoed the legendary bravery of Leonidas and his 300 Spartans. We will explore the Brallos Pass, where the 6th Australian Division held a heroic rearguard action against overwhelming odds to allow the evacuation of Allied forces.

Day 4: Flight to Lemnos – The Gallipoli Connection. We take a short internal flight to the island of Lemnos. This island was the primary base for the 1915 Gallipoli campaign. We visit Mudros Bay, the vast natural harbor that once held hundreds of Allied ships, and walk the shores where the ANZAC legend was born.

Day 5: Lemnos – The Nursing Sisters & Portianou Today is dedicated to the medical history of the ANZACs. Day 7: The Battle of Crete – Maleme & Hill 107 A day of deep historical significance. We walk the Maleme Airfield, the epicenter of the German paratrooper invasion in May 1941. Standing on Hill 107, you will gain a tactical understanding of the fierce battle. We also visit the German War Cemetery to reflect on the immense scale of the conflict.

  • Lunch: Private lunch at a local winery surrounded by olive groves.

Day 8: Souda Bay & The Galatas Heights. We visit the Souda Bay War Cemetery, often cited as the most beautiful Commonwealth cemetery in the world. We then head to the village of Galatas, the site of some of the most intense hand-to-hand combat of the campaign, where the bond between Cretans and ANZACs was forged in blood.

  • Lunch: On your own in the charming alleys of Chania.

Day 9: Preveli Monastery & The Great Escape. We travel to the rugged south coast of Crete to visit the Preveli Monastery. This sacred site was a hub for the resistance; we will learn about the daring Allied submarine evacuations and meet locals whose families risked everything to hide ANZAC soldiers in caves and sheepfolds.

  • Dinner: Farewell Gala Dinner with live traditional Cretan music and dancing.

Today you will visit the Palace of Knossos, built 3500 years ago! The Palace of Knossos is one monument you must see in Crete.

Discover and explore the History and Culture behind the Cretan diet with the company of our two executive hosts. You have a Cooking Class of four different dishes, lunch, followed by a food and wine pairing with a selection of four wines.

The Domaine Paterianakis is located in Melesses, in the Peza wine region, right in the center of Crete. Guided wine tasting has five different select domaine wines. Taste our tsikoudia from a local grape. Tasting a virgin olive oil and accompanying it with a platter of selected Cretan cheeses, deli meat, and handmade marmalade.

On this tour, you will try local “mezedes”, Greek coffee with bougatsa, while enjoying the city of Heraklion.

The next stop is the Unique Pastry History Museum.

We learn about the production, conditions, and specifications, and talk about the daily life of the confectioner-baker profession!

Includes an Olive Mill & Olive Museum tour and tasting of local products. The tour of the olive press, led by a farm family member, includes viewing the original 1865 hand-operated press and an explanation of traditional oil production methods. You will also see the working olive mill and learn about contemporary oil production with an expert-led olive oil tasting session with appetizers. After your olive oil tasting, you will go to Agios Nikolaos. Visiting Agios Nikolaos feels like stepping into a tranquil oasis where time slows. Today you will visit the Palace of Knossos, built 3500 years ago! The Palace of Knossos is one monument you must see in Crete.

Discover and explore the History and Culture behind the Cretan diet with the company of our two executive hosts. Our chef will demonstrate and direct you in making four different Cretan dishes, and our certified sommelier will share with you our knowledge regarding winemaking on Crete. This experience will offer you expertise in making Authentic Cretan Dakos, Handmade Cretan Pasta, or Handmade Cretan Pies, a homemade recipe from scratch, and a traditional dessert. At the end of your experience, you will enjoy the recipes you made with wines from our Estate, which will pair harmoniously. You have a Cooking Class of four different dishes, lunch, followed by food and wine pairing with a selection of four wines.

Enjoy a food and cultural walking tour suitable for all ages – it is an easy 1.5-mile walk, so you can explore the heart of Heraklion city while learning about its unique history and culture. The next stop is the Unique Pastry History Museum. The museum opened its doors on 1-7-2021 and currently includes 400 rare exhibits, with 32 unique in the world!

We will have a short tour of the production area. You see utensils, materials, and machines that our chefs need! We learn about the production, conditions, and specifications, and talk about the daily life of the confectioner-baker profession! We enter the specially designed space where the seminar will take place: on the subject of chocolate and its history! We show how we process it. We make chocolate eggs or filled chocolates! We learn to make our cornet out of paper! You write your name in “cornet” and make drawings on paper!

You see how olive oil was produced in the old days with manual tools and with the help of animals. Honey -Tasting & Tour: Taking part in the tour is an unprecedented experience for the history and production of Honey in Crete. The bees, these unpredictable alchemists, fly from flower to flower, finding hidden gems, the juices of fruit, and the nectar of each land. .Departure time: approximately 15:30-16:00 (depending on the meeting point). Duration 4-5 hours

In the evening, you have a cooking class. Join us for an unforgettable culinary experience at a traditional estate in Kissamos, just 500 meters past the port. Our cooking classes and tastings will take you on a journey through the flavors of Crete.

We’ll start the day with a sweet welcome treat of homemade spoon dessert before diving into the world of Cretan products. You’ll cook alongside us, learning about local ingredients and traditional cooking techniques.

Afterwards, we’ll take you on a tour of our small farm, exploring our olive groves and orchard. You’ll taste our freshly pressed olive oil and see where our vegetables, herbs, and grapes are grown. We’ll introduce you to our chickens and sheep, giving you a glimpse into our farm life.

Back at the house, we’ll prepare a delicious dessert together before sitting down to enjoy a dinner made from the dishes we created. Our meal will be accompanied by our wine, adding to the authentic experience.

Day 4. Mykonos – Explore Greek Mythology on Delos and Rhenia Beach

This Cruise departs from Mykonos every day at 10:30 am Boat arrives on the island of Rhenia at approx 11:15 am, where you will have time to swim sunbathe, and enjoy the homemade Greek lunch. 2 pm departing for the famous Island of Delos to visit the archaeological site (12 € entrance). If you don’t want to see Delos your captain will also allow you to visit another beach near Delos and continue swimming while the rest of the group explores Apollo’s birthplace. 4 pm departure back to Mykonos.

Day 5. Santorini – Crescent Cliffs

The new day arrives and brings with it the fabulous light bouncing off of the reflective water. After breakfast, you will have a private transfer to the marina where you will board a hydrofoil and cruise your way to Santorini. The most celebrated island curls in a crescent shape around the vibrant caldera. The cliffs are tall over the sapphire water as you disembark the boat. In the short distance, you can see the
rising peak of the volcano that has created and shaped Santorini’s gorgeous landscapes over time.

A semi-private transfer will greet you at the harbor and take you to the sensual seclusion of your hotel. The architecture is no less than picture-perfect: whitewashed walls with cobalt blue roofs decorate the precipice; it’s almost like you have stepped into a painting.     Today, you’ll say goodbye to Skiathos and make your way to your next Greek destination, Skopelos! Walk up the 199 steps to the top and simply enjoy the stunning views and the cooling sea breeze from the top of the rock. Enjoy a food and cultural walking tour suitable for all ages – it is an

easy 1.5-mile walk, so you can explore the heart of Heraklion city

while learning about its unique history and culture. On this tour,

you will try local “mezedes”, Greek coffee with bougatsa while

enjoying the city of Heraklion. The images and the flavors that take

you on this journey.

Then visiting Heraklion Archaeological Museum was founded in

1908 to house the first collections of Cretan antiquities, which were

rapidly enhanced. Its cultural riches cover seven millennia, from

the Neolithic period (7000 BC) to Roman times (3rd cent. AD).

Following the restoration work of the past few years, completed in

May 2014, the exhibition is housed in 27 rooms.

You’ll visit the Pastry History Museum. Museum opened its doors

on 1-7-2021 and currently includes 400 very rare exhibits, 32 of

which are unique in the world! We enter the specially designed

space where the seminar will take place on the subject of

chocolate and its history!

You will see the process of making chocolate eggs or filled

chocolates! You try your hand at making your own cornet out of

paper and practicing writing and drawing.

Day 6. Cheese Making – Cooking Class – Agios Nikolaos

This is a hands-on cheese-making experience. With the guidance of our local shepherd, you will have the chance to milk and feed

the goats, help in the production of two types of cheese (“Malakaenjoyfreshly made”

& “mizithra”) and learn the secrets of cheese-making in Crete. As

you are waiting for “mizithra” to be ready – it takes almost 20

minutes – we will invite you for a cheese tasting of another two

very famous types of Cretan cheese, “Gruyere” & “Anthotyros”. In

the end, you will taste the freshly-made cheese you helped

produce, along with our homemade meze and raki!

The Domaine Paterianakis is located in Melesses, in the Peza

wine region, right in the centre of Crete. It was founded in 1988 by

Emmanuela and Niki, are continuing the wine tradition of organic farming, creating authentic Cretan wines with a strong personality.

The winery is located within it vineyards, a pioneer facility built so

that winemaking is done in the most natural way, exploited of

city’s landmark is the 16th c. Koules fortress in the westernmost

side of the old Venetian port, which along with the fortification walls

(dating back to the same period) are among the most significant

and imposing sights.

own in Heraklion! The city of Heraklion is the commercial center of

Heraklion and you can find a wide variety in various for your
